Top budgeting tips for students

Being a student doesn't have to mean stretching your budget.
Take a look at these easy and effective tips to study what you want, while keeping your finances in order…
Budget during your first few weeks
Whether it’s a series of parties, dining out or enjoying your newfound freedom as a student, your bank account can take a serious hit if you’re not wary of how you’re spending your money. Budgeting is probably the last thing you want to think about – so luckily, there’s an app for that.
Apps like Goodbudget and Spending Tracker will allow you to keep your finances in check. Giving you the opportunity to break up your bank balance into days, while tracking exactly what it is you’re spending your dollars on may make you think twice about forking out $50 for jelly shots or going out for burgers on the daily.
Avoid full-priced books
The joys of being a student? You will find yourself surrounded by a heap of like-minded students – each watching their bank account in the same manner. On the flipside, this is the perfect environment for snagging yourself discounted textbooks. Take a look for notifications around campus, or keep an eye on your student email for any book sales – and be sure to get there as early as you can.
But if buying books isn’t for you or campus study isn’t an option, consider online courses. In many cases, your tuition will include the cost of your learning materials – textbook theories included. This is guaranteed to save you dollars, while giving you the flexibility to study without having to leave the couch for an 8am lecture.
Meal prep
Planning meals in advance isn’t only convenient – it’ll also save you a hefty amount each week. Picking up lunch after a lecture, or going for coffee and cake with friends can add up. Pay attention to how often this happens, and try not to let it become a habit if you’re trying to bulk up your account.
Sell, sell, sell
If you've found yourself with a pile of dust-gathering textbooks, start selling – you may be sitting on a mini gold mine of extra funds. This isn’t just limited to your textbooks. If you want some extra cash and have a whole lot of miscellaneous stuff laying around, now is the time to de-clutter and advertise online. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Go online and get paid
If you’re strapped for time, or are unable to take on a part or full time working position while you study, consider jumping online to get involved in paid work including online surveys, focus groups or freelancing.
