The number of job openings for Receptionists, including positions available in the health sector, is expected to be high at a rate of over 50,000* by November 2019 according to the Australian Government’s Job Outlook. The Health Care and Social Assistance sectors contribute the largest share of employment for receptionists, at 51.6%.  Administration business skills form a crucial part of the skills required by medical receptionists.  

The Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical) has been developed in consultation with industry professionals who have worked in Business Administration in the medical sector.  This course equips you with the skills you need to support administrative functions in a range of health settings, including general practices, major hospitals and all manner of medical clinics, including optical and dental clinics.

This nationally recognised health administration certificate course teaches you effective customer service skills that will enable you to contribute to the effective running of a medical practice. You will learn how to prepare and process medical accounts, maintain patient records, work in a team environment and respond to workplace problems, changes and challenges. Combined with learning administrative business skills such as, how to organise schedules and deliver a high level of customer service, you will gain a solid understanding of how to work confidently in an administrative position in the health care sector.

With a Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical), you will be qualified to work as a Medical Receptionist, Administration Assistant or Office Junior in a range of health care facilities and industry settings. You will be responsible for undertaking a range of administrative business duties, including directing patient enquiries, scheduling appointments and assisting in a range of clerical duties to ensure the smooth running of a health care or medical facility.

It applies to individuals who apply a broad range of competencies in various work contexts. In this role, individuals often exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate theoretical knowledge of customer service to provide technical advice and support to customers over short or long term interactions.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage appointments and diaries for personnel within an organisation, using manual and electronic diaries, schedules and other appointment systems. It applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments who provide administrative support to teams and individuals.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine, administer and maintain resources and equipment to complete a variety of tasks. It applies to individuals who are skilled operators and apply a broad range of competencies in various work contexts. They may exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate theoretical knowledge of business resources and their basic maintenance to provide technical advice and support to a team.

It applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments who design electronic presentations. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide advice to patients regarding fee structures and process referrals, as well as prepare and process medical accounts for a range of patients.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance in stock control processes within a medical environment. This involves assisting in maintaining stock levels, storing stock, stocktaking and disposing of out-of-date stock.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply principles and procedures relating to confidentiality, privacy and security to own work within the medical environment.

Contribute to health and safety of self and others
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work in a manner that is healthy and safe in relation to self and others and to respond to emergency incidents. It covers following work health and safety (WHS) and emergency procedures and instructions, implementing WHS requirements and participating in WHS consultative processes. It applies to individuals who require a basic knowledge of WHS to carry out work in a defined context under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility, in a range of industry and workplace contexts.
