This dual qualification provides you with general allied assisting knowledge and specialised assisting skills in nutrition and dietetics. It’s structured for you to complete a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance first to gain an entry level understanding of allied health, and then move into a Certificate IV focusing on your specialty area of nutrition and dietetics without needing to do extra practical work.  

At the conclusion of your study, you will be working alongside allied health professionals to provide valuable support for patients every day, helping to diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of illnesses and conditions. This chosen career pathway will mean that no two working days are the same with a diverse range of patients to support. Allied health assistance nutrition and dietetics is ideal for individuals wanting a profession that comes with the fulfilling feeling of helping people maintain or improve their wellbeing.

The HLT33015 Certificate III and the HLT43015 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Nutrition and Dietetics) is a Nationally Recognised course.

 

Eligibility Requirements

Education

Whilst there are no formal recognition of prior learning (RPL) or entry requirements mandated by the training package, students’ skills and capabilities to undertake this training product will be assessed and advice on suitability will be provided during the pre-enrolment process.​​​​

Minimum Age

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

Residency Status

You will need to be a permanent Australian resident or equivalent.

Computer Requirements

In order to successfully complete the online part of the education support course you will need regular access to the following:

  • Computer: Laptop or desktop computer with working speakers or headphone points
  • Internet: High-speed internet such as Broadband or ADSL, T1/T2, fibre optic (Dial-up access is not recommended)
  • Windows: Operating system – Windows 8 or above
  • Internet Browser: Google Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer 11
  • MAC: Operating system - OS X 10.14 Mojave or later
  • Software: Flash, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word (or Open Office which is free to download).

Work Placement

When undertaking both qualifications the student must complete at least 120 hours of practical placement with a qualified allied health professional. Please note if you undertake these qualifications separately, you will be required to complete 80 hours in the Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance and a further 120 hours in the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance. 

Students may need to undertake a Working with Children check to meet individual work placement employer requirements.  

We will assist you in organising a work placement location of your choosing.

Allied Health Assistant

Working directly with allied health professionals, you will help develop programs and conduct therapeutic activities to identify, treat, and prevent various conditions and illnesses in patients. 

Nutrition and Dietetics Assistant

Provide input into patient disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment in conjunction with Nutritionists or Dieticians. 

Medical Imaging Assistant

A medical imaging assistant works in the radiology department of a hospital, clinic or other health care facility. The assistant is a valued member of a health care team, assisting the radiologic technologist with patients during the imaging process. 

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Occupational therapy assistants partner with occupational therapists to develop and deliver programs for patients, helping them perform day-to-day tasks more comfortably and confidently. Regular tasks include fitting assistive equipment as directed by the occupational therapist.

Physiotherapy Assistant

Encourage patients to complete their treatment of injury, illness or disability-related physical issues.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and respond to instructions; to carry out routine tasks and communicate with a range of internal/external clients in a medical environment; as well as use appropriate medical terminology. They may exercise discretion and judgment using appropriate knowledge to provide technical advice and support to a team.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body. This unit applies to any worker who needs to use and interpret information that includes references to client anatomy and physiology.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide basic assistance to an allied health professional. This unit applies to allied health assistants working in a health or community context. Depending on the setting, work may include following treatment plans for therapeutic interventions and/or conducting programs under the regular (direct, indirect or remote) supervision of an allied health professional.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks. This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts.

Participate in workplace health and safety
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others. The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

* HLTAID003

Provide first aid
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. *This course contains units, HLTAID003 Provide first aid and HLTAID001 Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which must be completed through an external RTO. Foundation Education has an agreement in place with Red Cross Australia (RTOID 3605) which allows students to receive training for these units at a reduced price or you may source your own training provider. Please note that the cost of this external training is not included in any of your course fees. Upon completion, you will need to submit a copy of your first aid and CPR certificate for us to process a Credit Transfer against these units on your student record.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research information about compliance and ethical practice responsibilities, before developing and monitoring policies and procedures to meet those responsibilities.

Confirm physical health status
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to obtain and interpret information about client health status and to check a client’s physical health. It requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology. This unit applies to individuals working directly with clients and who assist in the provision of health care services. Some disciplines may be subject to state/territory regulatory determination regarding delegation and supervision.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for a worker to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in work environments that involve caring directly for clients. It has a focus on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community members. This unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, in both centre-based and home-based service provision.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation. It applies to individuals working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams and build a positive culture within their work teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures requiring the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

Assist with planning and evaluating meals and menus to meet recommended dietary guidelines
Assist with the monitoring and modification of meals and menus according to individualised plans This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to modify meals and menus to meet the nutrition requirements of specific client groups and monitor this against the individualised plans. This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of a dietitian. Individuals will take responsibility for their own outputs and may participate in work teams. A range of well developed skills and some discretion and judgement is required of workers.

Assist with the monitoring and modification of meals and menus according to individualised plans
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement meal order systems, distribute and process general and therapeutic menus and meal orders, distribute food and monitor client satisfaction.

HLTAHA020

Support food services in menu and meal order processing
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assess nutritional requirements of clients and participate in the implementation of therapeutic diets. This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of a dietitian. Individuals will take responsibility for their own outputs and may participate in work teams. A range of well developed skills and some discretion and judgement is required of workers.

Assist with screening and implementation of therapeutic diets
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assess nutritional requirements of clients and participate in the implementation of therapeutic diets. This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of a dietitian. Individuals will take responsibility for their own outputs and may participate in work teams. A range of well developed skills and some discretion and judgement is required of workers.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Given that some students may already be able to demonstrate their competence in some units, a recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment process may be available to students to recognise skills and knowledge that may have been gained through formal and informal training and/or learning, work experience and life experience.
