But you may be asking yourself, “should I become a dental assistant?”
Now, no one loves going to the dentist...
Well, no one admits that they like it anyway. But, have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt a sense of comfort. Someone greats you with a smile, asks how your day is going or how your feeling and you feel at ease in a safe, inviting environment in a not so ‘relaxing’ place.
That is one of the key attributes of a Dental Assistant. To connect, listen and build trusting relationships with patients and make a not so enjoyable visit, more enjoyable.
A Dental Assistant is more than just a Dentist’s Assistant.
Understanding what makes a good Dental Assistant and what their job entails, is more than you think! They play a pivotal support role within a dental practice and provide critical support for the services that the Dentists provide.
By becoming a certified Dental Assistant, you will be joining a growing industry and develop a range of transferable skills.
More often than not, a Dental Assistant is the first point of contact with patients and a good first impression is vital for a positive patient experience. A Dental Assistant has a vision and purpose, which goes beyond the direct needs of the Dentists as they become invested in the practice's success. Dig a little deeper into what you can expect by having a career as a Dental Assistant.
How does a Dental Assistant improve the success of a dental practice?
Firstly, Dentists cannot perform as well without a quality Dental Assistant as their ‘right-hand man/woman’. Every professional needs someone by their side keeping things in order, both behind the scenes and center stage! But, just like David Allen said, ”you can do anything, but you don’t have to do everything!”
Dentists are the same; they don’t go through years of healthcare training to take care of everything. They became a qualified Dentist for a reason, to implement dental practices and encourage oral health hygiene and care - so having a quality Dental Assistant who will support them, take care of some administration and connect with patients on a deeper level is what every Dentist can’t go without!
Secondly, a quality Dental Assistant will make patients feel welcome, comfortable and build strong trusting relationships to meet the patient’s needs.
From greeting them through the door right through their whole experience to saying see you next time. People enjoy good customer service and they enjoy being looked after, so communicating with patients and understanding how they feel when they are in an uncomfortable setting, is just what they need and it is the key attribute for a successful dental practice. A Dental Assistant makes people want to go to the Dentist! Crazy right?
Lastly, don’t forget to smile! It’s your best feature and a smile can go a long way!
