How much you can earn working in childcare
Interested in a career as a Child Care Worker?
The average child care salary will differ depending on which career path you decide to take, so let’s take a look at your options.
Child Care Leader - $36,883 - $53,211*
A room of children can be an overwhelming sensation of laughs, cries, squeals – and basically every other noise you can think of. It is the Child Care Leader’s responsibility to take charge and maintain an orderly running of the room, including children, staff, programming and planning. With an average child care salary of $21.00 an hour, you will be earning every penny.
Child Care Leaders are responsible for abiding by the Early Years Learning Framework guidelines, current OH&S policies and keeping an accurate record of any accidents, injuries, illnesses and medication needs of children.
Child Care/ Day Care Assistant - $36,536 - $52,008*
As a Child Care – or Day Care – Assistant, you are responsible for the supervision and monitoring of children in your care. Helping in the organisation of activities, schedules and routines involving a healthy balance of physical activity, rest and playtime, Child Care Assistants need to ensure children are happy, healthy and engaged in an array of educational learning activities.
Mealtime and snack preparation, nappie changing and ensuring children maintain a good level of hygiene are all part and parcel of an Assistant’s daily schedule.
Nanny/Au Pair - $31,168 - $53,713*
With an average child care salary of around $20 per hour, pay for this job doesn’t change much by experience, however in many cases a nanny’s living expenses (board, food and transport) will be subsidised by the employer.
As a Nanny or Au Pair, your job will largely depend on the duties outlined by your employer, whether you’re responsible for the after-school and evening care of children, or whether you are working both day and night as a nanny for infants, toddlers and older children.
Regardless of the hours of work, you will be the one responsible for the caring and education of children in your care, including feeding, bathing, and helping children with homework. Transporting kids to scheduled (and spontaneous) activities, arranging play dates and maintaining open communication with parents regarding their children are all daily duties expected of you as a nanny – and it’s likely you will be treated as a member of the family.
Child Care Centre Director - $49,386 – 76,417*
A Child Care Centre Director is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the day-to-day activities of a regulated child care centre.
Usually, Directors in the child care industry have a background in education, and are positioned in the administration department, rather than amongst the action. Managing curriculum, overseeing a centre’s facilities, hiring staff, budgeting and ensuring compliance with local and federal laws are all tasks undertaken at a Director’s level, along with being the ‘face’ of the centre.
