How you can choose your ideal career
Take a step back and ask yourself a few of the bigger questions
Defining your passion could be all you need to narrow in on a career journey that’s both rich and rewarding
Passionate or pragmatic
Are you driven by your passion for work, or are you set on working towards a healthy bank account? Finding out where your motivation lies is often the best way to discover your true potential.
Create a vision board with pictures that inspire you, and make a list of the skills you think you already have. From that, you should be able to capture the essence of what motivates you. Alternatively, personality tests are great for discovering your personality and behaviour style.
Finally, weigh up your passions and your talents. Pursuing a career that goes against your natural instincts may be a mistake waiting to happen - despite how cool your job title sounds. Similarly, following a career path simply because of practicality or convenience may make for an unhappy work life.
If you’ve made the choice to study, opt for a course that offers you the chance to take on a certain number of work experience hours. Alternatively, set up an internship or work experience of your own, and get a feel for what life is like in the industry of your choice.
Find a mentor
Finding someone who can share the lessons they’ve learnt during a successful career is extremely helpful, so start the search for someone who inspires you. Decide what it is you want in a mentor, and be sure to identify someone who you admire and respect.
Study up on qualifications
Do you need to attend university to make your dream career a reality, or is it all about gaining hands-on experience? Once you’ve discovered your areas of interest, start thinking about paving your career path.
